High potential and gifted education

At Cabramatta High School, we believe every student has the capacity to achieve excellence when given the right opportunities, encouragement and support. Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with engaging lessons, enrichment programs and extension activities designed to help them grow and thrive.

Our approach is guided by the NSW Department of Education’s High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) Policy, which aims to ensure that all students, regardless of background or circumstance, have access to challenging and differentiated learning experiences. This includes students who demonstrate high potential or giftedness in one or more of the four domains of potential: intellectual, creative, social-emotional and physical.

By identifying and supporting high potential and gifted learners, Cabramatta High School strives to create a learning environment that values equity, inclusivity and excellence, where every student is inspired to reach their personal best.

The following accelerated programs highlight how we support high potential learners at our school.

Advanced Learning Class

At Cabramatta High School, we are proud to nurture the talents of high potential and gifted learners through our Advanced Learning Class (ALC) program.

Each year, Year 6 students from local primary schools are invited to complete the Advanced Learning Class Placement Test, providing them with the opportunity to join a class that offers enriched and accelerated learning experiences.

Students in the ALC engage in a variety of challenging programs, including Accelerated Mathematics, gifted education projects, STEM learning, and mentoring opportunities that inspire excellence and curiosity.

Accelerated Mathematics Program

The Accelerated Mathematics Program provides students with the chance to extend their skills beyond their standard year level, encouraging higher-order thinking, creativity, and resilience. Through this program, students are supported to achieve at advanced levels and develop the confidence to take on new academic challenges.

Our Accelerated Mathematics Program continues to inspire and challenge students to achieve their personal best. Through this program, students develop confidence, discipline and a love of learning that extends beyond the classroom. Here’s what some of our students had to say about their experiences:

"We’ve learnt to challenge ourselves and manage our time in a fast-paced learning environment.”
Mindy & Rosie, Year 8

“The program has strengthened my problem-solving skills and opened future STEM pathways.”
Andriana, Year 9

“It’s been an amazing opportunity that taught me confidence, discipline, and humility in learning.”
Adam, Year 9
